An orthotic is a medical device that fits into your shoes to support, align, prevent or correct foot abnormalities, or to improve foot function.
Pedorthists are orthotic and orthopaedic footwear experts, trained in assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics and designing, making and adjusting foot orthotics.
Your feet are the foundation of your body. When a problem develops in your feet, it will result in a series of compensations which will place increased stress upon pain producing structures, like muscles, ligaments and bone, resulting in pain. If you are experiencing pain in the low back, hips, knees, ankles or feet when standing, walking or running, that is not getting better, it is time to consider foot orthotics.
The way your feet look is genetically determined just like your hair and eye colour. If you have pain originating from your feet, there is a good chance your children will as well since ½ their genes come from each parent
Orthotics only work when you wear them. As soon as you stop wearing them your feet go back to the position they were in. That is why it is so important to wear your orthotics as much as possible, both indoors and outdoors to get maximum benefit from them and pain relief.
